May 25, 2011 - Post-Otafest

'You Give, We Serve'

This year at Otafest 2011, the Otafest executive planning committee was amazed by the generous donations by the Otafest community. For the first time in the history of Otafest, the community rallied together to raise over $10,000 for the Japanese Red Cross to aid in earthquake relief in Japan.

The Otafest executive planning committee challenged our community by putting the dignity of five of our executives on the line by, depending on the amount raised, forcing the executives to don maid outfits for the rest of the convention. The bar was initially set at $5000 to get Otafest's Special Events Coordinator Shawn H, Vendor Coordinator Nathan H, Social Media Coordinator Gareth L, Chairman Justin L, and Animethon's Vlad P dressed up in petite maid outfits for the rest of the convention.

It is safe to say, this goal was shattered by late Saturday night. This forced all planned executives into their elegant outfits by Sunday. That being said, the Otafest community kept on donating to satiate their desire to both help Japan and torture the chosen victims. The committee decided to match this community generosity with executive self-sacrifice by forcing other Otafest executives into maid outfits (with an extra bonus of make-up as well).

Otafest is so amazed by our generous community and wants to thank our loyal fans, volunteers, guests, and contributors for their amazing contributions! Your donations will surely go a long way in helping out our friends in Japan, without which there would be no Otafest. So in the closing words of Otafest Chairman Justin Lo, in his pretty little black dress, makeup and wig, "DAMN YOU for accepting my challenge!"

See you next year!

Letter from the Mayor

May 19, 2011 - 'Twas the night before ota

Twas the night before Ota, and all through the hood,
Not a fan girl was stirring, the way that they should.
They all tried to sleep for the weekends display,
Of weapons free fun, in every way.
Yes, otaku were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of miku spun leeks in their heads.
The costumes were ironed, the headbands lay flat,
On the base of the bed and the side of the mat.
Then from on the computer, there rose a small ding,
As a mascot named Persephonie started to sing.
A new opened window, I rose up with glee,
To a light blue haired chibi, twas singing at me.
Then from the computer she came with a flash,
Right out into my bedroom, then away in a dash.
As she soon flew away to the cool may sky,
Leaving baskets of pocky for you and for I.
"Now Sasuke! now, Umi! now, Miku and L!
On, Ryuke! On, Gundam! On, Chairman as well!
To the top of the world! To the top of the sky!
Arigato' Matsuri wo O'Kudasai! "
And I heard her exclaim, as she flew far away,
"Otafesting for all, Otafesting hooray!"

May 11, 2011 - Charity Events for Japan Red Cross

The goal for Otafest 2011 is to raise $5,000 for Japan Red Cross!

To help encourage everyone to donate, several of Otafest's finest have agreed to donate themselves to the cause! Last year, they donated their hair (head, chest and back) and managed to raise over $5,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation!

This year, it's not just hair - they're giving us their entire bodies, and a fair chunk of their dignity and souls too!

For every $1,000 that we manage to raise, one of the more prominent members of the Otafest community will do...

... A MAID CROSPLAY! That's right! As the money comes in, for every additional $1,000 raised, someone will be put in a dress**!

Now, to introduce you to our sacrificial lambs brave volunteers!

So make sure you help us support Japan Red Cross (and get Chairman in touch with his feminine side), by participating in the following fundraising opportunities at Otafest 2011!

a) Bidding on Charity items in the Auction
b) Buying a caricature sketch at Artist Alley
c) Eating some delicious cake at the maid cafe
d) Tipping into the charity jar at the maid cafe
e) Buying a ticket in the jelly bean count
f) Just being generous and donating!

**Note: Since Vlad's complete maido-transformation will take several hours to prepare, if his limit is reached during Saturday, he will wear his costume beginning Sunday morning!
