Cosplay Contest: Aurora 2012 Hi everyone! It's your friendly neighborhood Cosplay Director!

I am sure that everyone is getting super excited for Otafest Aurora, I know I am, and that some are wondering about the Cosplay Contest! Well, I am happy to announce that there will be a Cosplay Contest at Aurora, however it won't be exactly as everyone is expecting it!

This year will be the very first Cosplay Pageant! Now, before everyone rushes off to their email accounts to send me hate mail for changing things, don't worry, the regular Cosplay Contest will return with the full convention next May, and you WON'T have to change a thing if you have already put together your entry for the Cosplay event. All you will have to do is bend your brains for one small addition which I will explain in a bit.

Now, the actual presentation of each entry will change a bit, but only in the actual PRESENTATION of each cosplayer. Let me explain. First, what is the difference between a classic Cosplay Contest and this new Cosplay Pageant? Well, the idea first popped into my head when I was flipping channels and came across a full day marathon of Toddlers and Tiaras (and no, I didn't stop and watch, but I do know what the show is about). I realized that Cosplay Contests and Pageants have very similar categories for judging and both are based on outfits and performances. So, when Otafest Aurora was announced and the Special Events committee decided that we wanted to do things a little different to make them special for the new convention, I figured this would be a perfect place to try out my idea!

The only thing that I noticed that was always part of any beauty pageant was a Q&A session! I immediately started laughing because I thought this would be a PERFECT opportunity to get the Cosplayers thinking on their feet! So, in addition to your costume and your performance, you will be judged on your ability to answer a question from the host IN CHARACTER!

So, with this new Q&A section, this is what a typical entrant's performance will look like:

1. The entrant (either a single Cosplayer or a group) will be announced by the host and will proceed onto the stage.

2. The entrant will walk to a X on the stage and do a spin for the audience. If the entrant is a group, then the first person to go onto the stage will be the "spokesperson" for the group and will be the one answering the Q&A question. Each group member will enter the stage one at a time and do their spin and then move towards the host.

3. The host will greet the entrant or spokesperson and then ask the Q&A question which will be drawn by the entrant or spokesperson from a hat. The entrant or spokesperson will then answer the question to the best of their ability (if a group, will answer with a group answer or a unique answer for each member of the group).

4. The entrant or group will then perform their skit.

5. After the skit is completed, the entrant or group will leave the stage and proceed to a staging area and line up behind the entrant or group who performed before them.

6.After the final entrant has finished, the entire group of Cosplayers will proceed in a parade across the stage one final time.

So, if you have already been working on your entry for the contest, there will be no problems incorporating it into the new presentation format! All you will have to do is think about how you would answer the Q&A question, and don't worry, the questions are all really simple (eg. "If you were a kind of fruit, what would you be and why?")

The rules and regulations will all be the same as the full cosplay contest and can be found here:

There will NOT be a pre-registration for the Cosplay Pageant, you will have to sign up for the contest on the day of, most likely near the registration desk (more info will follow).

I am looking for some judges for the contest as well, if you are interested in helping out, please email me!

If you have any further questions or concerns about the Pageant, please feel free to email me at and I will answer them as soon as possible!

Thanks everyone and I look forward to seeing you there!
