Bel Canto Strings is a professional string ensemble which features accomplished musicians who have been actively performing for weddings, receptions and banquets in the Calgary area since 1995. With many concerts and recordings Bel Canto Strings also contributes greatly to the Calgary artistic scene.
Our group conforms well to the needs of its clients and performance settings. We are flexible and can present various options upon request. We have a broad repertoire including classical, popular music and jazz and offer the option of arranging music. Consisting of two violins and a cello, Bel Canto continues to create an exceptional experience and quality of music for listening enjoyment.
Radek Sokulski is an accomplished violinist whose love for music helped organize the Bel Canto Strings. His excellent violin technique comes from years of experience playing in many chamber groups and orchestras like the Red Deer Symphony and Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. He lives in Calgary, and for many years now has been teaching violin and performing around Calgary and Banff. Radek Sokulski has received his Bachelor Degree with Distinction from the University of Calgary and has completed a Performance Diploma from Mount Royal University. He is also a talented composer who writes and arranges many works that the ensemble performs.
Olena Kilchyk is the groups superb cellist who thrills listeners with her technique and passion for music and her instrument. She holds a Master’s Degree in cello performance from the University of Calgary and she is a graduate of the Odessa State Music College where she completed her Bachelor Degree in music. Olena had the opportunity to study with such renowned cellists as Shauna Rolston, George Nikrug, Tania Prochazka and Raphael Wollfish. She has been a member of many chamber groups and orchestras based in Europe and in Canada and has toured extensively around the world. Olena currently works with the Red Deer Symphony and Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and is an instructor and a faculty member at the Mount Royal University Music Conservatory.
Karri Quan has been a chamber musician for over 25 years, and a violin instructor since 1995. She has studied under Joan Barrett, Josef Gingold, Lorand Fenyves, Shauna Rolston, and The St. Lawrence String Quartet, and has performed with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Calgary Civic Symphony, and the Calgary Fiddlers. As a founding member of the JEB String Quartet, Karri won the CIBC National Music Festival, and an Alberta Achievement Award. She holds a BMus Perf. (Hons) from the University of Toronto, and has toured to New Zealand, Australia, Norway, England and Scotland. She performs with the Red Deer Symphony, and is an active freelance musician, and a proud mama to two wonderfully musical daughters.
Jonathan Lewis is a music producer and recording engineer through his company, Moxam Studios. He has recorded many commercial projects, as well as producing his own music for theatre, film, and other commercial clients. Clients include OpenBSD.org, Steve Pineo, Firebelly Theatre, Theatre of the Living Statue, Danielle French, The Rembetika Hipsters, The Plaid Tongued Devils, Iain (Fred) Smith, and others. As a freelance musician, clients include Russell Broom, Mike Shields, Crystal Plamondon, Danielle French, Steve Pineo, Kaley Kinjo, Iain (Fred) Smith, Chantal Vitalis, and many others. Starting from a very early age, he was instructed in classical violin, viola, and piano. Jonathan was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. His post-secondary education includes two years at Mount Royal University Conservatory, studying viola with Nick Pulos. Jonathan has toured Europe multiple times and recorded on several occasions for the CBC Radio.
